The following review was written by my husband, Gary McNeff:
Used car salesmen.
If you’re anything like me, that phrase conjures up visions akin to the snake oil salesmen from the Old West – fast talking folks that would sell their own mother for the right price and wouldn’t know the truth if it bit them in the backside.
So, why am I writing a review of a used auto dealer? Because when you find one that is the exact opposite of that stereotype, it should be celebrated to encourage more of them to excel to higher standards.
Yes, I know that my wife’s blog is generally devoted to coupons, or as she says “all things coupon/free/cheapâ€. But after living with her for the last several years, I can tell you that what she leaves out of that little catchphrase of hers for the sake of brevity are things like “qualityâ€, “fairness†and “honesty†– things that also seem to typically be very lacking in the used car sales business – at least in our experience.
We were in the market to pick up a used car recently and were dreading it. The hassle of going back and forth and trying to find a vehicle we wanted, the haggling with the dealer, crossing our fingers that the vehicle we ultimately paid for would last more than a few hundred miles without having to go to the shop (I’m so NOT a mechanic). All of these things and a hundred more were going through our minds when we started looking for a vehicle.
We decided that East Windsor was our best bet. Because of the huge auction house there, there have to be at least 20 (if not many more) used car dealers along a fairly short stretch of Route 5. We went out at about noon on a Saturday and started looking. Some of the dealerships had the prices posted on the vehicles (thank you!!) which would at least give us a ball park idea of what they were asking although we knew that there would be some “wiggle room†when you started to talk to them about prices. Many of them had no prices posted (WTH? If I go to Best Buy to get a TV, I don’t have to guess how much they are asking; why should I do this with a vehicle?). In the first nine places we stopped, not one had someone come out to talk to us, even simply to say “hello, we’re here if you need usâ€. We did test drive a couple of vehicles, but nothing we were that impressed with.
When we pulled in to A1 Auto Wholesalers, we expected the same. We saw a couple of vehicles we were interested in and thought we were going to have to go in and drag someone away from their computer games (or whatever they were doing) to come out and help us. We were very pleasantly surprised when someone came out to greet us, told us they didn’t want to bother us at all but wanted us to know there were there to help if we needed it.
We ended up buying one of the vehicles from them after a couple of different test drives. We were both very impressed with how open and honest the dealer was – something we had not ever really run into before in buying a used vehicle (and I’m fifty – so I’ve done this once or twice before).
One of our primary questions was: what happens if we get this home and the next day something happens to it? Because it’s a used vehicle and there is no warranty, will you take care of it or are we left to our own devices?  He assured us that if that happened, he’d stand behind it and help us out.
We ended up having to test this out. Two days later, at 10:00 PM, I had a call from my daughter. They were stranded at Wendy’s after getting out of work because it wouldn’t start. I drove down and gave them a jump and got the vehicle home. This was on a Saturday and the dealership is closed on Sunday, so we called first thing Monday morning.
We spoke to our salesman (who is also the owner) and he had us bring the vehicle in that morning. He was as good as his word. He had it repaired (along with a couple of other very minor things we had noticed) and back to us within a few hours with no additional charges whatsoever.
We feel very good about doing business there and would VERY highly recommend them to anyone looking for a used vehicle. I know you have lots of choices when you’re looking for a used car – but we know where we’re going first the next time we need one.
Thank you Tracy for restoring our faith in the used car business!!!
