If you aren’t familiar with Glee Gum and Make Your Own kits, you’re missing out on a lot of family fun as well as a good way to talk to your kids about conservation. The kit I chose to review was Make Your Own Chocolate. Included with the kit is a narrative on the background of the cocao bean and how chocolate has become what it is today. There is even a link to get more information and lesson plans, if you would like to do this with a classroom of kids. This would be a very hands-on lesson and would fit perfectly into a unit on the environment or Costa Rica.
Quite frankly, the kit is very easy to use and I had no problems making the chocolate. Everything is labelled and pretty much idiot proof (which is good because I’m an idiot when it comes to stuff like this!). It was a lot of fun to see how chocolate actually comes together and what ingredients go into making chocolate. In addition, the kit included two actual cocoa beans; and the directions in the kit encourage you to taste them. (By the way – eww.) It was kind of like trying a roasted coffee bean to get an idea where coffee comes from.
If you would like to buy a Make Your Own kit – they also have Make Your Own Gum and Make Your Own Gummies – Glee Gum is offering a 30% off holiday sale on a special Candy Kit Combo (a package deal on 3 Make Your Own Candy Kits, 1 of each kind) at GleeGum.com.
